Practicum Information
Image
Students in the TESOL certificate program are required to complete at least one community-based practicum experience. This experience is embedded in TESL 451.
Students can complete additional volunteer (TESL 350) and practicum (TESL 451) experiences, under advisement.
TESL 451 Practicum Experience
Students can complete their practicum experience in a local, community-based setting (community/technical college, university, job training center, community literacy group, school, etc.) or in an online teaching and learning environment. The practicum experience requires a minimum of 40 practicum hours, 30 of which must include direct work with English learners.
We have partnerships in Whatcom and Skagit counties for completing the practicum experience. For students residing outside of Whatcom and Skagit counties, the TESOL program can assist in identifying practicum opportunities.
To request an override for TESL 451, students must have...
- completed or be concurrently enrolled in a language instructional methods course (see the "Courses and Curriculum" list of course options, e.g. TESL 340 or 441); and
- have a tentative practicum placement identified.
Individuals can work with TESOL to identify the opportunity that best meets their needs.
Note: Select practicum and volunteer opportunities may require a multi-quarter commitment.
